Looking for Illumination

By Babs Rodriguez

We like to imagine that the path we’d choose to follow through a forest filled with floor lamps would lead us to spots perfectly lit for reading, musing, relaxing and, yes, working. Tall, short, bright, diffuse, focused or overarching, we think all the just-right lights would eventually lead us home.

Happy birthday to Twiggy, the leggy cantilever lamp by Marc Sadler for Foscarini that launched an envious parade of wannabes. The new Twiggy Wood dresses up the iconic line by topping the slender carbon fiber stem with a limed durmast wood shade. The warm oak plus improved LED technology create a come-hither light. Frame is sold in greige and black, $2,116, Design Within Reach.

With an elegant alabaster tabletop and a second tier scaled to hold a cocktail, the Theo Floor Lamp from Regina Andrew delivers white-glove-level service. The ooh-la-la arrives courtesy of the contrast of ebony birch wood and lustrous brass, $1,450, Wright At Home.

A metal armillary sphere finished in a dark oil-rubbed bronze is pure factory boho, but French gold leaf and a sleek tapered base secure the Rondure Floor Lamp’s chic chops. The three antique-style bulbs are included, $495, Wrare.

Why settle for a traditional tripod lamp when you can get it with a twist. Don’t let the seeming insouciance of the Caldas Floor Lamp fool you; whether finished in walnut or ash, it leans into whatever you’re up to, $399, West Elm.

The no-frills Duke Floor Lamp has Bauhaus modernism to thank for its clean-line understatement. All that simplicity makes it easy to love, and LED strip lighting keeps it focused. Available in polished nickel and bronze finishes, $2,047, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams.

Painted in the chinoiserie style, this lamp has an old-curiosity-shop appeal for both its sturdy usefulness and vintage beauty, $900, House of Tuscany.
